Yesterday I was using this to solder on some modules and thought I would share it with you guys. I purchased the butane gas powered soldering iron at Radio Shack in 2005. It has been working for six years. At the time of purchase, it was around $19 now the price is around $23.
This is one of those products that work exactly as advertised. It can be use almost anywhere.
It's a soldering iron that works! You wouldn't want to use it to solder delicate electronics but for general, day-to-day soldering without having to have a cord it is great. You can stand on your head, upside down in the trunk of a car or crouched under an On30 module and the small size, with no cord is great. You can choose between a conical 1mm solder tip with a maximum temperature of up to about 1022°F (550°C) or a blowtorch tip with a maximum temperature of 2372°F (1300°C). The cap has a built-in striker for added convenience.
This should be one of the standard tools in all model builders toolbox.
The fuel is a standard cigarette-lighter butane canister.
It's still available. My only issue with the iron is the stand that is included. I’m not sure why they included it as there is a built in wire stand on the body of the tool.
It is possibly the best value for a tool that I have ever owned. It's the Energizer Bunny of Min-Butane Soldering Irons!
