Mike Cougill of O Scale Trains Publications has written the second book in the Masterclass Modeling Series entitled Detailing Track. Although Mike models in O scale, specifically Proto48, he really challenges us to look at our track as a model unto itself, no matter the scale you are working in.
The beginning chapters give a detailed description of the prototype, as well as points out some overlooked items that we can use to increase the level of detail on our own right-of-ways.

Further into the book, Mike describes his work, step-by-step with a list of materials he uses when laying and detailing his track. Again, most of what he speaks on is O scale but does mention manufacturers of HO scale detail parts as well. Some of which can be used in both S and O scales (I am referring to spikes).
Mike also spends time discussing detailing commercial track. This is great for those who do not have the time, money or patience to hand lay track to achieve a greater level of detail on their layouts.

On a final note, I will mention that for individuals who hand lay their track already, most of the techniques Mike talks about here you will be familiar with. However, I will tell you the ideas and details mentioned in the book can be of great inspiration to you. And as for those who have never done this before, Mike makes it doable.
Overall, this book is a great read and very inspiring.
