What is Texture Painting?

By Shawn Branstetter

Adding texture to your models is something that military model builders have been doing for some time now with very realistic results. However, it seems like the majority of our community of builders either is not aware of this technique or is afraid of it.

Whatever the reason is, I believe the bar has been raised by our cousins, the military modelers. They have been showing us that great weathering can be done with an air brush and chalk, but truly breathtaking weathering is done with both in layers and even mixed.

Take the above photo for example. There is no way you can achieve this level of weathering by dusting on some chalk. There is a lot of texture so you need to add layers of weathering to get the nice 3D effect. There are some modelers, such as Chuck Doan, who have been using similar techniques as the video below for a while now and the results are incredible. He has been mixing chalk and paint in layers to add grime and rust to his work.

There are so many different types of textures we can achieve. Rust Painting . Don't be afraid to look beyond our model railroad community for inspiration and don't be afraid to experiment. Your models will thank you!

I've got to tell you Shawn, I used this technique to "paint?" the trucks on the Bachmann project and it worked so well they look like they rusted out some time in 1865!! Probably too extreme for what I had in mind but it is so fun to look at (pictures later) I'm just going to leave them as crusty rotten looking as they came out. This is really cool. Any self respecting car inspector would "red tag" them immediately!!
